Water damage to flush? Here's how to fix it

Water can be very difficult to produce gypsum.

From ugly stains to peeling paint falling from the ceiling, there is a wider problem than just aesthetics.

So the first logical step to find the source of water penetration and correction. Only then does not make sense to go to the repair of the stucco.

In my experience, there are several common sources of leaks.

Plumbing leaks. If you can fix the plumbing, it will be before the game. Otherwise, bring a professionaland to do it well. This can result in a hole or a series of holes in the plaster. This can be daunting, but not so difficult to repair.

Leaking roof. There is hardly an old house that is not in that case has been visited once or more. It is usually the ceiling where the damage occurs. If you're lucky, you can only have a few points or a little 'paint peeling off. But you can also have a larger problem, like pronounced sagging.

The water passes through theWalls. If an exterior wall is masonry, like stone or brick, it is possible that wick water through the wall and in the layer of plaster on the inside. To get bubbling of paint and spraying of plaster, perhaps some loosening of the veneer coat (outermost layer of plaster).

Sometimes the root of the problem is defective rain gutters spilling water on the wall. On the walls of wood frame, the water around windows can sometimes seen as stains, flaking, etc.

Well, a possible appeal.

Above all, I do like you, you can have a perfectly adequate job of repairing the plaster with drywall compound and drywall tape. If you do well, and you have dealt properly with the sources of water, plaster repair will last. I really do not need to remove plaster.

You can mud drywall all-purpose or "hot mud", a sort of connection, the setting is more difficult than ordinary mud. With hot mud, mix small batches. If youcompleted a step, clean your tools and pots thoroughly before you mix a new batch.

Patches of peeling paint and are easy to solve. Scrape or wire brush the area, and then wipe with a sponge or a damp cloth. You must remove all materials of scale and dust. If this is completely dry, paint on a block stainkiller in the bush and remain a sealed surface to connect to.
Apply drywall tape to paper the cracks and the two successive layers in aMinimum.

larger holes require assistance. If there is no place to attach a patch, you must set the media. 1 x 4 boards or strips of thin plywood and plasterboard screwed in place it can be screwed. Shim, if necessary, at first so the drywall is level with the surrounding plaster. Fill out the edges with hot mud and tape around the perimeter. Smoothing the edges blocked until everything is flat.

If the plaster is loose, remove and replace with drywall described as thinabove. Speaking of wooden slats, this is quite simple. If the patch is the kind of style in gypsum plaster splint, and more than veneer sagging skin, the area collapsed and I saw replace with drywall, etc.

The exterior walls, the water problem be solved by a thorough cleaning, the application of a special seal. It might be a good consultation with a specialist. Replace broken gutters. Then, at home, scrape all loose chalk / powder. Remove dust, etc. Wetfill depressions and one or more layers of boiling mud, if necessary.

If it can repair the damaged plaster, you have gained valuable experience and also saves money in the process. And ... We must admire your job!
